my nvme disk with 72% health status, why?

Post by emanuel. »

Hi, I'm wondering why my nvme sata disk has a 72% health percentage if it has almost no use. Is it a program error? Thank you very much. Best regards.

Re: my nvme disk with 72% health status, why?

Post by hdsentinel »

I can confirm that no, of course it is not a program error, Hard Disk Sentinel does exactly what it should: detect and report the actual real status and degradation which may be otherwise missed.

Please see the text description, which describes the situation: there are no problems with the SSD, but
The health is determined by SSD specific S.M.A.R.T. attribute(s): #233 Media Wearout Indicator

If you check the S.M.A.R.T. page, you can verify this attribute and you may notice the value 72 which means that the health of memory cells is 72%, caused by the amount of data written. As you can see on the Overview page, the

Lifetime Writes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 23.47 TB

so despite the SSD is "almost no use" somehow 23+ TB data already written on it.

Exactly to help and prevent confusion, this is described on many pages. Please check these for more details:

Support -> Knowledge Base -> Hard Disk Cases -> SSD case: health decrease by wearout
https://www.hdsentinel.com/ssd_case_hea ... earout.php

and

Support -> Q&A Knowledge Base -> Solid State Drives, SSDs -> Why my SSD shows 98% health if no problems reported?
https://www.hdsentinel.com/kb/category/ ... orted.html

I recommend to try to minimise the amount of written data. The health % value will not improve back but hopefully it will degrade slower.
