Temperature Monitoring

Post by SJMarty »

Hi,

I have an external disk that runs a little hot. I don't want to get alerts from it but I don't want to increase the thresholds for all of the disks. How can I exclude a single local disk from temperature monitoring?

Thanks.

I've deselected and/or unchecked the drive from everywhere I can find but I am still getting temperature alerts from it. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your question.
At the moment, it is not possible to exclude the drive from monitoring/alerts or selecting different (non-global) threshold, it will be available in a later version of Hard Disk Sentinel.

Currently (as a temporary solution) you can
1) increase the temperature threshold for alerts (but it affects all drives)
on Configuration -> Thresholds/tray icon page

2) just apply a negative offset for the temperature of your external drive. This way that drive will seem to have a lower temperature (to prevent reaching the threshold). This is possible on the S.M.A.R.T. page of the drive and using the "offset" column in the line of attribute 190 or 194.
For more information about this topic, please check Help -> Appendix -> Temperature calibration

Thanks for the reply.

Do you anticipate this feature being available in the next version or further down the road?

The next version will be released soon with new hardware support and general improvements but without this feature.
It will be scheduled to the following version.

Well cool! It looks like this feature was added after all to v3.30! Thanks.

I have a question...

When I choose to modify custom temperature thresholds, I input 105F/110F and click OK. When I go back in to view the settings, they have changed to 106F/109F. The same thing happens on another drive. I set it to 125F/130F and when I went back in to view the settings, they were changed to 126F/129F.

Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks!

Yes, it could be available in this version ;)

This is normal, caused by conversion of the temperature units.

Hard disk drives measure and report the temperature values always in (integer) Celsius units so the software always use Celsius units internally for comparison, saving values to its database and so.
The displayed values are converted to Fahrenheit units if that option is selected.

When you enter a custom Fahrenheit temperature value, it is also converted to Celsius (for consistency the software uses the same unit) but converted back to Fahrenheit when you open the window again.

So when you enter 105 F, the software stores it as 41 C (40.56), which is then converted back to 106 F (105.8).

In real life, it has no effect on any functions and the display because 105 F cannot be reported by the drive.
If the drive would report itself as 40 Celsius -> the displayed value will be 104 F.
If the drive would report itself as 41 Celsius -> the displayed value will be 106 F.
Because there are no possible values between them, 105 F would never be displayed. So please do not worry about it - the software just displaying the value which CAN be reported by the drive when it adjusts the Fahrenheit value.

Excuse me if it caused any problems or confusion!
