I installed the trial version of HDS on my 32bit Windows 8 Pro today. Installation went well but the launch of the program caused the system to be non-responsive for several minutes. The PC was never locked up but every programs became very slow. The problem went away once the disk icons are on my system tray. I also tried disable detection of SCSI/USB drives under the configuration screen but that does not make any difference. Not sure if this is the norm.

Please use Report -> Send test report to developer option.
It is possible that one of your hard disk controllers may need a driver update as the current driver may respond very slowly, causing the software to wait for that.
If you have external storage devices (even an older pendrive or memory card reader) you may try to disconnect them temporarily to check if there's any difference. If this happens, further using Report -> Send test report to developer option would help to check the differences and verify what can cause the slowness.

Thanks. Looks like it is my old Dell 2405 monitor's USB card reader that causes the problem. When HDS starts, there is nothing on any of card slots.

Some card readers respond very slowly when accessed (even if no card inserted).
The Report -> Send test report to developer option would help lots to check the actual situation and add a "filter" to prevent touching the card reader, so there should no troubles in the next version.

Since this is a trial version, I don't plan to configure it just to send a report. Anyway, the card reader is part of the Dell 2405FPW monitor with 4 USB ports. Printout for two of the ports is as follow:

You do not need to configure anything.
Just use Report -> Send test report to developer option, enter a name and e-mail address (if you prefer to have response) and comment (not required).
That contains further information, for example the "raw" response provided by the USB device which helps to check and improve the situation.
The copied information is nice - but does not really help as it is designed for the user, not for developer
