LSI MegaRAID 9271-8i drive detection weirdness

Post by Y0tsuya »

Have trouble detection some drives through LSI 9271-8i. I can get full detection on my Win11 machine. On my Win2016 machine, v5.61 detects better than v6.01.

Case 1: v6.0,1 RAID5, Win11, all 4 HDD in RAID set detected, along with the Kingston SSD serving as a cache

Case 2: v6.01, RAID1, Win2016, 2 HDDs in RAID set missing. Kingston SSD cache also missing

Case 3: v5.61, RAID1, Win2016, 2 HDDs in RAID set detected, but Kingston SSD cache still missing

Sorry for the troubles.

Not the OS or the controller - but the SSD cache is the source of the problem, it always makes the detection extremely hard: when such SSD cache used on the LSI controller, it always cause troubles to detect the relation between the logical drives (arrays exported to the OS) and physical disk drives.
Generally all versions have minor changes for LSI controllers exactly for such configurations and to attempt to "dig" more, eg. to detect all drives including the cache, unconfigured, hot spare drives too.

Both versions you try are old (especially 5.61).
Wonder why/how the newer version can detect less details.

Generally I'd recommend to always check with the latest possible version (which is 6.10 now) and (instead of images as they do not give any information) use Report menu -> Send test report to developer option. Then it is possible to check the "raw" information detected from the actual controller and investigate the relation and improve the detection / reporting.
For reference, you can use Report menu -> Send test report to developer option in the older versions too (as then it is possible compare the reported details by those versions, this may give additional thoughts), but the most important would be to use in the most recent version of Hard Disk Sentinel.

This usually helps to uncover the mistery and make an update to properly detect and report all drives on the controller (if the latest version could not do already).

I've submitted a report using 6.10. It has the same result as 6.0.1. If you want a report from the fully-detected case for comparison I can send that too.
