Any ideas, thoughts - not necessary related to Hard Disk Sentinel.

Estimated remaining lifetime i

Post by Represent808 »

I have a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB. This was originally used as a boot drive. Later the laptop was retired but I put the drive back into use via a USB enclosure and having it on all the time as extra storage for work projects.
Per HD Sentinel:
The power on time is 1,246 days
Estimated remaining lifetime is 398 days
Lifetime writes 24.50 TB
Should I be worried? The driver will puke out within about a year???

Without seeing the status, Health, hard to say but probably no, no need to worry.

Generally the Estimated Remaining Lifetime is calculated based on
- how long the drive used (the Power On Time value)
- the current Health %

The estimated remaining lifetime is not a strict countdown,it will not show when the drive will fail FOR SURE.
It just suggests when it is recommended to plan / consider replacement in a mission critical environment because if the end of the designed lifetime will be reached, the drive may fail suddenly (even if it's Health % indicator is relatively high and no errors reported).

If you check the Estimated Remaining Lifetime value for long time, you may see it does not stricly counts down and later may stop counting down at all.

For non-critical use (and with proper backup) it can be perfect and probably can work for many more years.

You may check this topic too for general information:

Sorry, do not really understand what is the question.

Please check the Help, it explains the Health and Performance values.

Generally the Health reflects the actual status of the drive, how "good" it is.

The Performance reflects how fast is the actual drive in the current system, is there anything (eg. wrong cables, connections, USB adapter, old chipset drivers etc.) which may limit the transfer speed. This is generally independent from the Health and the actual status of the drive, so it is possible to have high Health with low Performance - or high Performance with low Health too.

The 83% Health probably caused the wearout of the SSD. Please check
https://www.hdsentinel.com/kb/category/16/solid-state-drives-ssds/why-my-ssd-shows-98-health-if-no-problems-reported.html
which explains the situation.

83% Health is very good result for an SSD with
Power on time = 1,246 days
Lifetime writes = 24.50 TB
(as you wrote).

I'd plan/consider (not too urgent) replacement below 50% (when the text description turns to yellow) and would immediately replace below 25% (when the text description would be red).
