Main window will not display

Post by daystorm2000 »

I cannot get the main window of the application to display. It stays minimized in the taskbar... any ideas? Windows 10.

There can be different issues.

1) It is possible that the application displays - just outside the current visible screen.
For example if you use multiple monitors and moved it to 2nd monitor, then the software remembers its position and next time opens there.
But if that monitor is switched OFF, it is possible that it opens - but you do not see.

2) Also it is possible that the software is currently waiting for the response of one of the disks/controllers and during that detection, it seems not responding (so does not process the "show main window" command).

I'd recommend to try
- completely close the software by right click on the tray icon and select Exit. If the small popup menu does not display at all, then issue 2) is more likely.
- delete the file HDSentinel.ini from the folder of the software to restore default settings and remove the window size/position saved (so restore factory default settings). This does not clear any collected status, statistics, logs or so.
- restart Hard Disk Sentinel to check if there is any change.
If it opens, I'd suggest to please use Report menu -> Send test report to developer option, then it is possible to check the current configuration and verify if there is something which could cause troubles previously.

I have the exact same issue, but neither fixes it. HDD sentinel running (in Task Manager) but I cannot see it.
I deleted the .ini file and it did not help.

This sounds something different if the INI file removed and the situation is the same.

Generally when Hard Disk Sentinel starts, it detects all disks/drives in the system. If one of these drive(s) may not responding (or just responding very slowly) then Hard Disk Sentinel may "stuck" at the detection before the main window displayed.

Did you see the software previously running? If so, did you change any configuration related to storage since that?
I mean did you add/remove disk drive(s), RAID controller, Host Bus Adapter, external storage, pendrive, card reader or similar?
If you have some removable drive(s), maybe you can try to disconnect for a test (and reboot to be sure) - just to check if things are different and to point on the device which may cause troubles.

Do you have the latest possible version installed? If you have older version with a new hardware, it may be not 100% compatible with it, so I always suggest to use the latest possible version (even a beta in such cases, as beta versions may have updates specifically for some devices/situations).

If there is no change, I suggest to

1) completely close Hard Disk Sentinel (terminate from Task Manager if required)

2) Please open an elevated command prompt: click on the Windows search field, type CMD.EXE and on
the result, right click and select "Run as administrator".

3) Then navigate to the folder of the software, eg. if the program installed in the default folder, then

CD "C:\Program Files (x86)\Hard Disk Sentinel"

and then enter

HDSentinel.exe /ENABLETEST /REPORT

This should create a
testmode.txt
HDSentinel_6.20_report.txt

into the folder of Hard Disk Sentinel.

The above is 100% safe of course, it does not cause any problems in the operation of course just logs all detection steps between the drives and the software. The report file may not created at all if the detection stops - then the other file may point on the last step(s) performed and which device(s) may be related.
So please send the resulting file/files (maybe compressed RAR/ZIP/7Z etc) as then I can check, investigate specifically.
