On or off line ?

Post by evvivame »

Hi,
Since a few days the disk WDC WD10SDSW-11AGTS0 is half online half offline :)
Half online: because, as you can see on the desktop.jpg this disk is online (ico=42°)
Half offline: because, as you can see o the same screen, it non appared on the list of the connected devices

From HDS Enterprise this disk show all params except the free%

I also attach the HDS report

p.s. i have already changed the USB port
p.s. system very static !!

Some suggestion?
Thanks
Luciano

Hi !

According the images, the drive is offline: it is not connected to the system. This is why it does not appear in Windows Disk Management.

Generally when a drive disconnected (or inserted) Windows triggers an event about the changed disk configuration. Hard Disk Sentinel detects this notification and automatically updates the list of drives - so then (if things work correctly) we immediately see that a new drive connected / or a previous drive removed.

In some rare cases, Windows may not make this event - so then the drive remains visible for some time (you can see its icon) but if you'd make a manual update (leftmost button in the button bar of Hard Disk Sentinel, showing two arrows) then it will also show that drive #1 is not present.

If the drive is not present (so there is no logical drive associated with it) then the free % space is missing, this is completely normal and expected.

Yes, (especially because it is 2.5" USB drive) I'd say the issue is related to the cables, connections, USB port, passive USB hub (if used) or the external enclosure: so the drive may temporarily disconnects from the system. Yes, I'd say to try different USB port, maybe different USB cable if possible. Front panel USB ports frequently cause similar sudden disconnects of 2.5" USB drives, as they may not provide stable power output / connection.

Interesting is that (by the report you attached) I checked the last detected status and it seems correct: the drive does not show any communication error (199 Ultra ATA CRC Error Count) or unexpected power loss (192 Power off Retract Cycle Count) events.
These attributes frequently count events when there is a sudden power loss / issue with USB cable, connection or so.

If you have the opportunity, I'd recommend to use USB hub with an external power supply: personally I always recommend to use such 2.5" external USB hard disks with USB hub with external power supply to provide enough power and stable connection.
